I am starting the write a new story-thing that will hopefully be an animated project. With, like, 2 minute episodes. Really short. But anyway. I absolutely suck at writing human male characters that aren't utterly boring. If anyone wants to suggest character traits/personality traits for this category, I would be most appreciative. Well, it'll certainly be mentioned in any kind of credits attached to this thing. Ultimately I'd like to put this project on the Chaotic Distortion YouTube channel.
Some background is that this is a kind of... fantasy/comedy/sci-fi-ish genre thing. But I want the first character introduced to be a guy who's just going about his life (whatever that involves) when he is somewhat forced into a role as a defender of his universe along with others. It's all very lampshade-hanging heavy too.
Any input will be hugely appreciated. Small details, in-depth personality stuff, multiple characters, whatever, I'd take anything/everything on board, and it's very likely it'll all be included.

How about having him start off being carefree and a little disrespectful, such as, say, having him respond to most interrogatives and imperatives with "Eh", and have him develop into a loyal, respected soldier or even leader?

I guess not completely carefree, but disrespectful for sure - generally he's gonna be questioning everything about the situation and be very resistant to the whole idea - largely because the one who wants him to be this "defender" badly explains everything and/or doesn't care if what they're saying makes sense. So he gets impatient, etc. But as it goes on, he's forced to take the whole thing seriously..

Forced to begin with, but eventually he genuinely starts caring; probably through some intense circumstances, such as someone close to him dying or nearly dying, or the universe being put in grave danger - enough that it convinces him to step up his game.
As for other characters, some ideas: - An obligatory female love interest (he needs some motivation, right?) - A father figure in the organization defending their universe; maybe the (presumed) MC is an orphan - A variety of allies in the organization, including some that are attached to the guy right away and others that perhaps initially form a rivalry or some animosity that's later resolved
And there's probably others, but those are some to at least spark some inspiration.

Oh yes, that's what I was thinking anyway. When things get close to home. And there's probably others, but those are some to at least spark some inspiration. You have sparked inspiration, thank you! - Lol, any love interest in my stories is usually short-lived/doomed from the start..! But in saying that, yes, there will be characters for such a purpose! - I like the idea of the father figure - not something I would have thought of at all. And yeah, I hadn't really envisioned any parents, or at least didn't think such characters would show up at all. Trouble is I will probably have an equally hard time developing any other male characters such as that one! He'd probably develop through various situations with the main guy though. - There were always going to be many allies, it'll probably grow larger and larger... this is kind of an extension of a story I've written for about 15 years that ended up having a cast of hundreds/thousands. Some characters from it will appear in this. The rival thing will be good though, I hadn't thought of that for this character, and it would be a good development tool...

I always find myself liking a few kinds of personalities that might make good side characters for you:
Nervous, stuttering, likeable person who eases up in company of friends but prefers flight over fight. Smart, sarcastic and sharptongued bugger who will never admit that they appreciate their friends, and vice-versa. Pure, innocent little cream puff who takes everything in good fun and is completely oblivious to danger. Chaotic and maniacal, with no real reason besides just wanting to blow something up. Dark, insidious, and stealthy, but prone to anger, who works from behind the scenes.
